According to the 'ControlLogix Selection Guide':
The ControlLogix® system provides sequential, process, motion, and drive control
together with communications and state-of-the-art I/O in a small, cost-competitive
package.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a stand-alone controller and I/O modules in a single chassis. Or use the ControlLogix system as a gateway. Include the communication modules you
need for connectivity to other networks.
The ControlLogix Gateway integrates into existing PLC-based systems so that users with
existing networks can send or receive messages to or from other networks.
Benefits of using the Communication Modules in a ControlLogix Gateway
Interfacing with communication networks is modular. Separate communication modules (1756-ENBT, -CNB, CNBR, -DNB, -DHRIO) are available to interface between EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+, and Universal Remote I/O links. Different combinations of communication modules can be plugged into the ControlLogix backplane to bridge and route data between the supported networks.
Since messages are sent directly from one communication module across the backplane to another, it is not necessary to include a processor in a ControlLogix Gateway chassis. The ControlLogix Gateway integrates easily into existing PLC-based systems, and messages can be sent and received seamlessly from one network to another.

Leveraging the Control and Information Protocol (CIP)
The communication gateway power of the ControlLogix PLC takes advantage of the fact that at their core, EtherNet/IP communication packets use Control and Information Protocol (CIP) data packets. These same data packets are also used by DeviceNet and ControlNet networks.
